Organ Donation
The law requires Coroners to ensure that organ donation does not compromise their investigation into the cause of a death. If a death is reported to the Coroner, organ donation can only take place with their express permission. However, the Coroners Service strongly support the valuable work of the NHS Transplant Service and will allow organ donation wherever possible.
If the deceased does not require a post mortem examination, there will usually be no difficulty with agreeing to proposed donation. If a post-mortem examination is required, the Coroner will consider which, if any, organs can be donated while still being able to obtain accurate results.
