Family members as witnesses
At most inquests, the Coroner will invite a member of the bereaved family to present a ‘pen portrait’ telling the Coroner something concerning the life of the person at the heart of the inquest. Not all families will want to do this. Exceptionally, cases may also arise in which it would not be appropriate to allow the use of pen portraits. Subject to those rare exceptions, however the coroner will generally inform the family in advance that they will be allowed to present such material should they wish.
In addition a family member may also be asked to act as a witness as they can state facts that are relevant to the death.
We understand it is difficult to talk about someone who has died but the Coroner is sensitive to this and will help and guide you through giving your evidence.
We can only pay travel expenses and loss of earnings for people that the Coroner has called to court as witnesses. Should family members who are not called as a witness choose to attend to observe or support, they are responsible for their own expenses.
Emotional and practical support to families and witnesses attending inquests can be found on the Coroners' Courts Support Service website.
